News from Dr. Root

Dear Parents:

I’ve been asked, “Now that the override passed, what comes next?” The funds for the override become available beginning July 2008. The district is working on creating a list of “to do’s” and reviewing these lists with principals at each site. We’ll be getting new playground equipment! Last year’s auction raised $8,100 for the playground. We decided to wait for the outcome of the election then determine how to best support the playground needs. It could be shade structures or additional play equipment or something else entirely. Once our new equipment is finalized, we can make a better decision on how best to spend the funding provided through the auction. We will be seeking your comments, suggestions and ideas when we reach this stage! Thank you to each and every voter who turned out to vote for the election! The children will love their new and much needed playground!

News from the (new) PTO President

Jodi Towns has taken on a new business adventure this year requiring more of her time.  Therefore, she has resigned as PTO President; however, she remains on the board as Dir. of Corporate Affairs/Secretary.  I’d like to thank her for all her hard work this semester.  Sonnya DeBonis will be our new Treasurer, and hopefully President next year.  I have agreed to complete the year as President.  Our updated roster is at:  http://www.lagunapto.org/LagunaPTOBoard.html

Thank you everyone for your patience during this transition period.  In following her legacy, we will continue to offer evening parent/teacher meetings.  We hope to present topics of interest or concern to our Laguna community.  If there’s a topic you’d like addressed, please let me know.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at dcbabbitt1961@yahoo.com.  Diane Babbitt

SCHOOL WEBSITE

Don’t forget that Laguna Elementary has a website too. http://www.susd.org/Laguna/

You’ll find helpful information there such as information on curriculum, our Emergency Response Plan materials if you missed the two parent night events, information on our faculty including teacher websites and much more.  As we become more conscious of environmental sustainability, you’ll find that more information will be available only online and less coming home in paper form.  Stay informed by staying connected at http://www.susd.org/Laguna/ and http://lagunapto.org/

Web Based Accelerated Reader

Our new and improved Accelerated Reader Program is up and running!  The library is a busy place which makes us all excited to see all the books that the children are reading and taking AR tests on. Testing for AR can only occur at school and between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Students are welcomed to test in the Laguna Library beginning at 7:45 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This new program has increased the AR titles and not all of AR books in our library are labeled at this time.  In order to find out if a title is AR please access the Internet and enter http://www.arbookfind.com in your address bar. Once at the AR Book Finder Site enter exactly the title of the book. If the book title and author match then we have the test for that book.  This means we have every test ever made for AR!  While on this site take a look around at the Collections section which gives you all types of lists of award winning books.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Geha our Teacher-librarian if you have any questions.  She is here to help youJ bgeha@susd.org or 480-484-2406.
